Media Studies

Every two weeks we will host a Friday movie afternoon in the ABEL classroom.  The majority of the films we watch will be movies that have an Indigenous lens, allowing us to explore contemporary Indigenous themes, ideas and world views.

This is meant to be an opportunity to relax, enjoy new films and engage in class discussions about themes, symbolism, representation and reconciliation.

Many of our follow-up discussions and assignments will align with curricular outcomes found in the English First Peoples New Media 10 curriculum:

  • Recognize and appreciate the role of story, narrative, and oral tradition in expressing First Peoples perspectives, values, beliefs, and points of view

  • Recognize and appreciate the diversity within and across First Peoples societies as represented in new media and other texts

  • Explore the impact of personal and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts

  • Examine the suitability of selected media for purpose and audience

  • Explore the authenticity of First Peoples new media texts
