Social Studies

In the ABEL program we will be working on Grade 9 BC Social Studies outcomes in order to prepare for the transition to grade 10 and 11 courses.

In addition to the grade 9 curriculum, students in the ABEL program are provided with lessons and activities with a broader view of social studies, culture, language and geography. Mapping skills, provinces, territories, continents and oceans are reviewed each year to ensure that students have solid foundation from which to extend their learning.

The Big Ideas in this course include:

  • Emerging ideas and ideologies profoundly influence societies and events.

  • The physical environment influences the nature of political, social, and economic change.

  • Disparities in power alter the balance of relationships between individuals and between societies.

  • Collective identity is constructed and can change over time.
