Digital Stories

Digital Storytelling combines sounds, images and video to create stories.

Your Assignment

Tell a story in less than 5 minutes using digital technology.

Your Options

  • Short Film (film and edit a movie using your phone or an iPad)

  • Cartoon (using PowtoonScratch Studio or something similar)

  • Photo Story (take pictures and create photo-story)

  • Music Video (make a video for a song you love)

Your Group

I would like you to work in groups of 2-3 for this assignment.  Being able to work effectively with others is an important 21st century skill.  When we work with others, we need to collaborate, synthesize ideas, share the workload, respect other viewpoints and modify our own thinking.

Your digital story will:

  • be 5 minutes or less

  • have a narrative arc (plot) that includes a beginning, middle and end (they do not need to be told in this order!)

  • have at least one character (does not have to be human)

  • include digital pictures/visuals/videos

  • include sound/music (dialogue or narration is optional)

  • appropriately credit all people, organizations, quotes, ideas, music, and contributors

New Media Resources:

We will have a cart of iPads for 6 classes.  You can use the iPads to take pictures/videos and use iMovie to edit your story.  You may also use your own phones/cameras/laptops to create and edit your story.

Process:

  • Brainstorm story ideas/characters

  • Decide which form of new media you are going to use to tell your story

  • Write a script / create a storyboard

  • Film or create!

  • Edit

  • Share

Due Date:

  • Thursday, May 6th Period 4

  • We will host a class ‘Film Festival’ and have a chance to view all the stories.

On a summer day in the 1950s, a native girl watches the countryside go by from the backseat of a car. A woman at her kitchen table sings a lullaby in her Cree language. When the girl arrives at her destination, she undergoes a transformation that will turn the woman’s gentle voice into a howl of anger and pain. A residential school musical.
